What you need to pray your first rosary
Very little, and none of it has to be bought today. The rosary can be prayed on your fingers. Beads help at the start, though, because they take the counting off your mind.
- A five decade rosary. The standard model, used in almost every parish.
- The mysteries for the day. They are listed further down this page, and after a week you will not need to look.
- Somewhere quiet enough. A chapel is lovely; a kitchen table at six in the morning works just as well.

How to pray the rosary beads: what every part is for
Hold the rosary and it explains itself. A five decade rosary has fifty nine beads: fifty three for the Hail Marys and six for the Our Fathers.
- The crucifix. Everything begins and ends here. This is where you make the sign of the cross and pray the Creed.
- The first single bead. One Our Father.
- The three small beads. Three Hail Marys, customarily offered for an increase in faith, hope and charity.
- The centerpiece. The small medal joining the pendant to the loop, usually bearing an image of Mary. It marks where the circle starts and closes.
- The five decades. One larger bead for the Our Father, then ten smaller beads for the Hail Marys. The Glory Be goes in the gap before the next large bead.
Your thumb moves one bead per prayer, and when you reach the centerpiece again the decades are done.
How to pray the rosary step by step
Here is the full sequence. The first time through, go slowly.
- Take the crucifix and make the sign of the cross. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
- Pray the Apostles Creed, still holding the crucifix.
- On the first single bead, pray one Our Father.
- On the three small beads that follow, pray three Hail Marys.
- Pray one Glory Be as you reach the centerpiece.
- Announce the first mystery of the set that belongs to today, and pause long enough to picture the scene.
- Pray an Our Father on the large bead, then ten Hail Marys on the ten small beads, keeping that mystery in mind as you go.
- Close the decade with a Glory Be. Many families add the Fatima prayer here.
- Repeat steps six, seven and eight with the second, third, fourth and fifth mysteries.
- Finish with the Hail Holy Queen and the sign of the cross again.
In a group it is common to add a Marian litany and prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father, customs rather than requirements.
The four sets of mysteries and the day each one is prayed
Every decade is given to one scene from the life of Jesus and of his mother: twenty in all, in four sets of five. The joyful, sorrowful and glorious mysteries have been prayed for centuries. The luminous mysteries are recent, proposed by John Paul II in the apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae on 16 October 2002, which also suggested the weekly arrangement most people follow today.
- Monday and Saturday, the joyful mysteries. The Annunciation, the Visitation, the Nativity, the Presentation in the Temple, and the finding of the child Jesus in the Temple.
- Tuesday and Friday, the sorrowful mysteries. The Agony in the Garden, the Scourging at the Pillar, the Crowning with Thorns, the Carrying of the Cross, and the Crucifixion and death of the Lord.
- Wednesday and Sunday, the glorious mysteries. The Resurrection, the Ascension, the Descent of the Holy Spirit, the Assumption of Mary, and her Coronation as Queen of Heaven.
- Thursday, the luminous mysteries. The Baptism in the Jordan, the Wedding at Cana, the Proclamation of the Kingdom, the Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Eucharist.

How to pray the rosary daily without giving up on it
Most people who stop do so for one of a few reasons, and each has a fix.
- Attach it to something you already do. The commute, the walk after dinner, the twenty minutes once the house is asleep. A rosary with no fixed slot is one you will skip.
- Pray one decade when five will not happen. One decade prayed slowly beats five rushed.
- Pray it with someone. Family or a parish group carries you through the evenings you would skip alone.
Groups hit one practical snag early. Do you need blessed rosary beads to pray?
No. The prayer is the rosary, not the beads, and an unblessed set works exactly the same. Having your rosary blessed by a priest or deacon is a widespread and good custom, and the blessing makes the object a sacramental, a sacred sign that disposes you to receive grace. It is not a condition for praying.
What is the difference between the rosary and the Divine Mercy chaplet?
